To: NOVELL, Maggie (Secretary to Roger Godsiff, Labour MP)
Subject: Brian Haw Peace campaign
Dear Maggie,
I am one of Roger Godsiff's constituents and I am emailing you in response to a recent letter you sent to me dated 12th oct 2007. Thank you for the correction and advice that you made a mistake and typed Iraq when it should have been Iran and of course Roger's confirmation on his position that he would not support an attack on Iran at any point in the future. I live in hope that those issuing orders to the armed forces are not likely to get the two countries muddled up at any point either. I have heard several rumours that any attack on Iran would be likely to occur in June or July 2008 and that preparations in the armed forces are already under way. Is there any truth in these rumours and is it possible for Roger to ask questions and see if there is some plan already in action for an attack in 2008?
I am also emailing you on the subject of an urgent matter to me and would like to establish what Rogers position is on Brian Haw's peace protest in parliament square. I have put some information below that puts Brian Haws current position into context and I am interested to know whether Roger supports Braian Haw in his peace Campaign and also if there is anything Roger can do to help Brain Haw to recover his tents and protect his position to ensure he can continue his protest without further harassment.
From Roger Godsiff
25th October 2007
Thank you for your email.
I have not heard of any rumours in Westminster about the possibility of British forces being involved in any attack on Iran in June or July 2008 and, as I have already said, I do not believe that there is the slightest possibility that British forces would be involved in any unilateral or bilateral action against Iran.
So far as Brian Haw's peace protest is concerned I believe that everybody has got the right to protest peacefully and there is nothing to stop Brian Haw or any other organisation that wishes to hold a protest demonstration from turning up in Parliament Square, after giving proper and due notice to the authorities, and making their views known.
Regards
Roger Godsiff. Local Labour MP responsible for area where I live in Birmingham
